Independent American Delegation to Baghdad
An independent American delegation, led by Representative Nick Rahall and
former Senator James Abourezk, is scheduled to arrive in Baghdad on Friday
night (Sept. 13).
Rahall is one of the very few members of Congress to visit Iraq since 1991.
Rahall, of West Virginia, is currently serving his 13th term in the U.S.
House of Representatives.
Abourezk represented South Dakota in the United States Senate.
The delegation also includes: James Jennings, president of Conscience
International, an Atlanta-based humanitarian aid and human rights
organization;
and Norman Solomon, executive director of the Institute for
Public Accuracy, a nationwide consortium of public policy researchers.
The trip, described by participants as a "humanitarian mission," comes as
President Bush is seeking formal authorization from Congress to launch a
large-scale military attack on Iraq.
