USA delegation to Kurdistan to renew USA commitment to protect Kurds

11/12/2001   KurdishMedia.com - By R. M. Ahmad
London (KurdishMedia.com) 10th December 2001: Iraqi Kurdish sources report that a USA delegation of high level is arriving to Iraqi Kurdistan region to renew USA commitment to protect Iraqi Kurds after the threats made by Iraqi Dictator, Saddam Hussein, to cut the tongue of any Kurdish leader refuses dialogue with him, reported in the international media.

The sources disclosed to A-Sharq Al-Aussat yesterday that the delegation headed by Rayan Woker, deputy assistant of USA foreign Minister for the Far East Affair, and includes the Officer on charge of Iraqi File in the ministry and diplomats from USA Embassy in Ankara. They are accompanied by representatives of Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The sources added that the delegation would meet Barzany, the leader of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Talebany, the general secretary of Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) as well as the leadership members of KDP and PUK. One of these sources added that the discussion between the Kurds and USA, in addition to the peace process between both parties and bilateral relations, would include the subject of the general situation in the region especially in the light of the continuous war against terror forces in Afghanistan and USA policy towards Iraq. The source added that the delegation would renew USA commitment to protect Iraqi Kurds from any probable attacks by Iraqi Forces after the threat of Saddam Hussein against Kurdish leaders in case they refuse to start dialogue with him.

The source considered the USA delegation visit, the first of its kind since 1999, reflects the positive results of the joint visit to Washington by KDP and PUK joint delegation on last October. This joint Kurdish Delegation included Hoshyar Zebary, a member of KDP politburo, and Dr Burham Salih, the Prime Minister of Kurdistan regional Government (KRG-Suleymania).
