Release February 16, 2001 Regarding Today's US Strikes South of Baghdad: American Muslims strongly condemn repeated US bombings of Iraq, particularly today's strikes south of Baghdad. Bombing Iraqi facilities thought to contain weapons are in most cases located in residential areas, which usually results in killing innocent civilians and worsening Iraqis' desperate situation following ten years of sanctions. The sanctions have resulted in more than 1.7 million deaths, of which the majority were children below the age of five. It is also our belief that bombing Iraq only bolsters Saddam's position with the Iraqi people as protector of his country's sovereignty against the US, and further jeopardizes US relations with the people of the Middle East, which work against US interests in the region. We pray for the end of the bombings & sanctions, for the besieged people of Iraq, for the relatives of the dead and injured, and for the welfare of the Iraqi people who have suffered long enough in the hands of Saddam Hussein and US actions, such as today's strikes.
