Re: European parliament reported resolution

The report in Azzaman looks inaccurate. Philippe Morillon and Sami
Nair are indeed French members of the European Parliament, but it is not
clear where this debate was supposed to have taken place. The European
Parliament does not meet in Paris. The parliament is in session only 7
days each month, and there was no session on 24 April.

UK members of the EP might well oppose the UK government on certain
questions; euro-MPs are elected directly, not delegated by their own
states. However, since the majority of UK members of the EP are
Conservatives, it is most unlikely that any resolution on Iraq was carried
'unanimously.'

The EP adopts resolutions on all kinds of matters over which it has no
influence whatever - human rights in Myanmar, female genital mutilation in
Somalia - and it has severely limited powers even within the European
Union. The Council of Ministers - where the real power lies - is not
obliged to take note of any resolution passed by the EP.
