Iraqi council member under fire
>From a correspondent in Baghdad
13Nov03

US troops opened fire accidentally on a car carrying a member of the Iraqi Governing Council, the
Iraqi administration said today.

The council member escaped injury but the driver was hurt.

Mohammed Bahr al-Uloum, a Shiite Muslim cleric, was travelling inside the US-guarded compound,
known as the "green zone," when the incident took place.

The statement did not give a time for the shooting and US officials at the military press centre
said they knew nothing of the incident.

The statement said a US officer on the scene expressed his regret over the shooting and apologised
to the cleric.
