EU citizens: US should pay for Iraq

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Most EU citizens think the war
in Iraq was not justified and want the US to foot the
reconstruction bill, a survey revealed today.

According to a poll carried out by Eurobarometer
earlier this month, 68% of citizens feel that the
American-led war in Iraq was "not justified".

The majority are also against the US guaranteeing
security in Iraq. While 43 percent want the United
Nations to guarantee security, just 6 percent think
Washington should be in charge.

EU citizens also feel strongly about donating money
for humanitarian aid in the war-torn country. While
most (65%) think the US should finance the rebuilding
of Iraq, the vast majority of those asked want their
own country to send humanitarian aid to the region.

Citizens in Greece, Ireland and Portugal (all over
90%) were most in favour of sending humanitarian aid
with Finns (68%) showing the least enthusiasm for the
idea among the 15 member states.

The Commission today said that 380 million euro of EU
money has "already been committed and dispersed" in
Iraq for humanitarian aid.

Eurobarometer's findings were reflected in reality
last week. At an international donor conference for
reconstruction in Iraq, 28 billion euro were pledged.
However, the vast majority was promised by the US.

Countries who strongly opposed the war, such as
France, Germany and Russia, remained extremely
reluctant to dig deep into their pockets.

The survey was carried out between 8-16 October by
Taylor Nelson Sofres/EOS Gallup Europe for the
European Commission. 7,515 people in the 15 EU member
states were questioned.
