The role of the media in creating these opinions is ignored. The media constantly repeats official claims that there are WMD. The media constantly reports sensational finds of evidence but the later analyses that show the reports were wrong is not given the same emphasis. It should not be too surprising that people who may not pay much attention to the issue should think that WMD have been found. The manner in which the "free" media works ensures this type of result. Only 19 percent of Americans know that there were no Iraqis among the 9/11 terrorists. About 2/3 think there is a connection between Hussein and Al Qaeda. This is not so much a case of cognitive dissonance as demonstration of how the media helps to manufacture consent even when the consent is based upon misinformation.
