Nielson: "US wants to appropriate Iraq's oil"

POUL NIELSON - EU Commissioner responsible for Development & Humanitarian
Aid is not sure that the Americans are really trying to give the Iraqis
their country back.

The US wants to appropriate Iraq's oil, according to the EU's Development
Commissioner, Poul Nielson, quoted by DRNyheder.

"The unwillingness to give the UN a real, solid, legal and well-founded role
speaks a language of a certain pronounced character," he said after a three
day visit to Baghdad.

The promise given by the US to pull out of Iraq quickly does not appear
realistic to Mr Nielson, writes DRNyheder, adding that the Danish
commissioner is not sure that the Americans are really trying to give the
Iraqis their country back.

"I think that the US are on their way to becoming an OPEC member this way.
It is difficult to make things add up any other way", he added.

In Bagdhad, Mr Nielson had a meeting with a representative of the American
retired general Jay Garner, who is handling the reconstruction of Iraq, and
it is not least this meeting that has made him doubt the American motives.

The European Union is the world's biggest donar of development aid.

arbejder for at give irakerne deres land tilbage:

Gitte Seeberg, udenrigspolitisk ordfører for de Konservative.

Dansk Folkepartis formand, Pia Kjærsgaard, kalder Poul Nielsons udtalelser
for venstreorienterede og antiamerikanske. Hun vil bede statsministeren
forholde sig til EU-kommissærens udtalelser.
