Well no, it never hurts to ask, and people will research as they want to
(there is no obligation), and some may have better access to some
resources, or will rememeber seeing something. Sometimes the right
question is more important than an answer.

I sure wish that the journalists asked more and better questions, even if
they do get the standard runaround. :)
