Dear Ken Hanly,

The Holy Father is indeed an uncompromising critic of
the war against Iraq. He deserves much credit for this,
although I'm not sure that he has put the full force of the
Vatican's political and financial clout behind the effort.

My heart overflows with thanks for merciful providence
sparing us the apocalypse of an interim administration
with Pope Perle.  (Shudder!)  My reference, of course,
was not specifically to il papa, Giovanni Paolo.

As I'm sure you understood, I meant to convey that soft-
spoken piousness, while befitting the papal office or the
otherworldly visions of a mystical recluse, is jarringly
out of place in a secretary general of the UN.
