RE: [casi] inconsistencies in the Galloway case?

Dear List,>
Here is an excerpt from the interview with David Blair aired on National
Public Radio, April 22 2003:
Reporter (Patrick Cox):
“David Blair describes how he came across Galloway’s alledged Iraq connection.
”
David Blair: “‘...On Saturday I visited the Foreign Ministry ...looking for
documents.
So I went up to the Foreign Ministry, I went up to the first floor, there was
a small room and inside that room there was a very large pile of box files
most of which had been thrown onto the floor. “
Reporter: “Blair removed two box files, marked Britain, and had the contents
translated...”among the documents, says Blair, was a memo to Saddam Hussein,
from Iraq’s spy chief.”
Blair “It’s five pages long and it carries the Iraqi eagle and the seal of the
Iraqi intelligence service. And it describes a meeting between George Galloway
and an Iraqi intelligence agent on the 26th December 1999.”
Reporter “The memo alledgedly states that Galloway received a share in the
sales of millions of barrels of oil sold under the Oil for Food programme. The
share works out to be at least $600,000 a year....

>From listening to this, one could think that David Blair
removed the boxes from the Ministry first, and had then taken them to a
translator, which is slightly different from the story in the Daily Telegraph,
in which he said he had the documents translated on the spot by a
translator. Blair also doesn't indicate in this interview that he was
accompanied by a translator when he went to the Ministry.
And the translator would have to know what kind of stuff Blair
was after. Other questions: Was the word BRITAIN on the boxes in Arabic or in
English? At what point did Blair take the boxes out of the Ministry? Who has
the boxes now? And, what is the legal status of ownership of the boxes under
an occupation?
And, as others point out, could this be a scam from inside the Iraqi
Ministry? Could Mr Galloway be so stupid as to receive personal
monies from Iraq? Having heard Mr Galloway speak very movingly
about a woman having a Caesarian without anasthetic in Iraq
under sanctions, I believe that Mr Galloway is motivated by human
compassion as much as anything else,

>Another suggestion, if we trust the Telegraph, I've seen floated is that
maybe it was an Iraqi official claiming Galloway had been given the money and
pocketing it. Possible...
>
>It's true 90% of Americans might believe it but Galloway is an MP in the UK
so it has to be something we would swallow and dumb as we are I would suggest
we aren't that dumb. Gorgeous isn't that dumb either.

>But then often a good slur does enough damage.

>The UK government has a bit of a track record with forging.... badly now
doesn't it.
