[ Converted text/html to text/plain ] PRESS RELEASE (To be sent out) October 1, 2002 Contact: Daniel Robicheau (email: danrobicheau@hotmail.com[1]) Justice and Peace Coalition, Flagstaff, Arizona Roxanne George, Flagstaff Activist Network, 928 213 9507 (email: flagact@infomagic.net[2]) FLAGSTAFF COMMUNITY MEMBERS SEE THEIR ROLE AS LEADING SMALL TOWN AMERICA AGAINST BUSH'S WAR ON IRAQ With huge to medium sized anti-war protests raging in cities across the US, a protest in Flagstaff, AZ (pop. 56,000) drew 700 citizens last Friday afternoon, Sept. 27th, to “unwelcome” President G W Bush. It was a historic first for this normally conservative Southwest American town. Norm Wallen, former Flagstaff City Council member, is fasting to protest war with Iraq. Bush came to Flagstaff to endorse a Republican Congressional candidate. Arizona has become a pivotal state in the race to gain a majority in Congress, which is needed by Bush to pass his resolution for war on Iraq. Flagstaff community members understood the importance of protesting President G W Bush in this small Southwestern town. The same day, Phoenix, two hours drive south of Flagstaff, and the state capitol, turned out 1,500 protestors with several arrests, including that of an American Civil Liberties Union local coordinator. “There are many people in Flagstaff who want to lead small town America to protest the immorality of killing Iraqi innocents,” said Daniel Robicheau, a member of the Justice and Peace Coalition. “Protestors want to make the point that if a small Arizona town in a traditionally conservative state, is against this war, then how many other small towns in America are also against the war?” Robicheau said. Flagstaff community members have formed a Sister City relationship with the Stop the War Coalition based in Bristol, England to support each other’s campaigns to end the war and sanctions, which according to UNICEF, have resulted in the deaths of half a million Iraqi children.
