Dear All, "Hope my message goes to the dumbest ear on earth" (Sanjay Sharma). Message recieved, with thanks! M reminds us of the Wests imperial past, and how it affects attitudes today. Which brings me to the casual use of the name, "America" (i.e. the USA), frequently on this List. In so doing, are we not colluding with neo-colonialism? And forgetting that "America" includes many countries in Central & South America, as well as Canada. Ever heard of Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Chile etc. Aren't those countries "American"?. Presumably, Cuba, too, with a USA base at Guantanamo Bay (poularly "Gitmo"). Doesn't a linguistic monopoly go hand-in-hand with colonialist attitudes? As for "American", there must be some appropriate adjectives to replace it (I could suggest a few for certain US citizens, but my upbringing tells me to be polite!). Greetings, Bert Gedin, Birmingham, UK. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com _______________________________________________ Sent via the discussion list of the Campaign Against Sanctions on Iraq.
