[casi] Re: Telegraph editorial 'Justice for Iraqis'

Sir

Contrary to your suggestion that there is 'precious little Christian
doctrine' in the Pax Christi statement 'The Morality and Legality of a
War Against Iraq - A Christian Declaration' ('Justice for Iraqis',
The Daily Telegraph, 7 August 2002), the core of the Declaration is
the restatement of four basic principles of 'Just War' theory: Lawful
Authority, Just Cause, Right Intention, and Last Resort. The Pax
Christi Declaration demonstrates that the proposed war against Iraq
fails all four tests.

Your response also failed to engage with the proposal in the
Declaration for the return of UN weapons inspectors to Iraq, and 'as
a sign of good faith', a decision by those countries calling for the
return of inspectors to open up their own nuclear, chemical and
bacteriological facilities to the same process of international
inspection.

For those who are sincerely concerned to end the spread, and
prevent the use, of weapons of mass destruction, this legally and
morally valid path holds greater hope than the continuation of unjust
sanctions and the launching of an unjust war.
