If anyone on the list is organising an anti-sanctions event as part of the 11 Days of Action (20th - 30th November) could they please let me have the details immediately. Best wishes, Gabriel voices in the wilderness uk voices@viwuk.freeserve.co.uk ******************************************************* 11 DAYS OF ACTION AGAINST THE ECONOMIC SANCTIONS ON IRQ November 20th - 30th "Media work and awareness efforts in general during these next few months before [November 30th] are immensely important. We must increase the pressure as much as possible, particularly on the US and UK Governments, to make them realise that ‘enough is enough’, and that beyond the end of November it cannot be ‘suffering as usual’, with or without so-called ‘smartness.’" Hans von Sponeck, former UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Iraq PHONE THE FOREIGN OFFICE! The 11 days begin on Universal Children's Day (November 20th) with a co-ordinated phone-wave directed at the British Foreign Office. Please e-mail voices at voices@viwuk.freeserve.co.uk with your name and (if possible) a telephone number so that we can arrange a time slot. 11 YEARS OF SUFFERING Over the last 11 years, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children have died as a result of the economic sanctions imposed in August 1990. In an attempt to head off the growing international pressure to have these sanctions lifted, the US and British Governments have drafted a ‘smart’ sanctions resolution at the UN. Their deadline for getting this resolution adopted is November 30th. ‘Smart’ sanctions cannot resolve the humanitarian crisis. They offer ‘an aspirin where surgery is called for’ (Economist, February 2001). 11 DAYS OF ACTION In order to put pressure on the British Government in the run-up to the November 30th deadline there will be 11 days of action against the sanctions from November 20th - 30th. The 11 days will begin on November 20th (Universal Children’s Day) with a co-ordinated international phone- and fax- in directed at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Participating in the phone-in is simple and will require no more than 5 minutes of your time on the day. What’s more you can do it from your home or work-place! A full briefing pack - including key facts and sample uestions - will be available. To take part, contact voices by 1 November with your name and contact details. Please indicate if: a) you want to take part in the phone-in on November 20th and would like a briefing pack (also available on-line at www.notinournames.org.uk b) you'd like more information about the 11 days of action c) you're going to organise an event during the 11 Days (in which case please include information about the event) voices in the wilderness uk, 16B Cherwell St., Oxford OX4 1BG.
