Mark Thomas' article on sanctions on Iraq

To Letters Page, New Statesman

An error crept into Mark Thomas' (18 June) otherwise
excellent article on the sanctions on Iraq. The UN Oil For
Food (OFF) programme is not the only authorised channel for
goods into Iraq. The UN also approves goods outside OFF
paid for by aid or the Iraqi government's own resources:
$432.7 million worth of such goods were approved between 1
January and 8 June 2001 ($20 per person). The figures in
the article are solely for OFF goods.
