King Abdullah Sanctions Statement: Correction and Alternative Translation (27 Mar 01)

As it currently stands and is posted on King Abdullah's Website, the official Jordanian version of
King Abdullah's call to "lift sanctions" contains a typo.

[begin]

As for our brethren Iraq, its inconceivable suffering has gone on for far too long. It is time to
end TO this suffering, and to lift the embargo on Iraq. This Arab country has always been at the
forefront of the Nation in defending its causes and rights. It has never failed to respond to the
calls of duty, sacrifice and brotherhood.

[end]

An information officer at Jordan's Embassy to the U.S. confirmed the above should read "It is time
to end this suffering".

Below is an alternative translation from a native Arabic speaker. Please note the section in
parenthesis is a suggestion from the translator. For the Arabic version from which the translator
translated, see: http://www.kingabdullah.jo/speeches_interviews/opening_summitar.html

[begin]

"As for our brethren Iraq, its suffering has gone on for too long, and has exceeded all
imaginations, and the time has come to place an end to this suffering and to lift the sanctions on
this Arab nation which has always been on the forefront of protecting the interests and rights of
the Arab World (or 'Arab Nation'), and which has never been hesitant in sacrificing or responding
to an appeal of duty and brotherhood."
