Attachments

Dear All,

Please could everyone remember that you should not send messages with
attachments to the discussion list. I'm afraid this is a list rule -
please don't do it!

There are several reasons for this rule:
 - Most types of attachment carry serious virus transmission risks
 - Attachments massively bloat the size of emails, causing people on
systems with limited storage allocation (such as many university systems)
to exceed their storage quota and become unable to receive email.
 - Many list members are on old-fashioned email systems which make it
difficult or impossible to see attachments at all

If you wish to share documents such as Word documents, you should copy and
paste the plain text into an email, rather than attaching the Word file.
If you wish to share pictures, you should either put them up on the web
somewhere and just give a URL, or mention that pictures are available and
send them direct to individuals who request them from you.

Many thanks for your cooperation,

Seb Wills
acting list manager
