Horrifying. *********************************************** 4 -- UNWire -- 28 March 2000 POLIO: Vaccinations In Iraq, Sierra Leone Iraq today launched the first phase of a nationwide campaign to vaccinate 3.5 million children under age 5 against polio (Agence France-Presse, 28 Mar). A second round will begin on 25 April. UNICEF and the World Health Organization declared Iraq polio-free in 1990, but the disease reappeared in the mid-1990s. Last year, 77 cases were reported. UNICEF blamed the resurgence on a health infrastructure weakened by war and UN economic sanctions that were imposed to punish Iraq after the 1991 Gulf war (Donna Bryson, Associated Press, 28 Mar). -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a discussion list run by the Campaign Against Sanctions on Iraq For removal from list, email soc-casi-discuss-request@lists.cam.ac.uk Full details of CASI's various lists can be found on the CASI website: http://welcome.to/casi
