BIG BEN TO BAGHDAD BUS Dear List Member, The MARIAM APPEAL has launched a major new international initiative to highlight the campaign against sanctions and to bring to an end the suffering of the people of Iraq. ³The Big Ben to Baghdad² convoy will be led by an especially modified red London double decker bus which will travel through the UK before heading on to France and Spain. It will then cross into Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt before reaching Jordan and finally crossing into Iraq. By driving through these destinations and holding major rallies in key cities, we hope to highlight the devastation and cruel suffering that sanctions have caused. As man of you know nearly 7,000 children a month are now dying in Iraq because of the effects sanctions have had on medical supplies and services. Below you will find details of the UK rallies. Now is a particularly poignant time for the Appeal, as, sadly, Mariam Hamza, after whom the Appeal is named, is critically ill having been diagnosed with a secondary cancer. Tuesday 7th September Wednesday 8th September 11.00 AM - 1.00 PM 6.00 PM - 7.30 PM George Square, GLASGOW Centenary Square, BIRMINGHAM Thursday 9th September 6.00 PM - 7.30 PM Hyde Park, Speaker¹s Corner, LONDON (Nearest Tube - Marble Arch) A host of prominent people are scheduled to speak at the above rallies. Those invited include the following; Rt Hon Tony Benn MP, Harold Pinter, Bill Speirs (Gen Sec STUC), Alex Mosson (Lord Provost of Glasgow), Tariq Ali and many, many others. If you need further details on the above rallies please contact Mahreen Khan 0171 872 5451 Copies of our newsletter ³JUSTICE² are also available.
