Sanctions-Breaking Delegation Searched As They Leave For Iraq Today, Sunday 16 May, three British anti-sanctions campaigners engaged in breaking the sanctions on Iraq were searched at Heathrow airport on their way to Jordan. Andrea Needham, Simon Emdin, and Joanne Baker, members of Voices in the Wilderness UK, are taking medical supplies and medical journals to Iraq without export licences, thereby breaking UN sanctions and risking possible five year prison sentences. The three were stopped as they went through the security check at Heathrow and asked if they were carrying medicines. Security guards referred to a higher authority to determine whether syringes and needles were 'okay'. In the event, nothing was seized from any of the three campaigners - who are not carrying medicines on this particular delegation. The three campaigners delivered a letter to 10 Downing Street yesterday informing the Government of their intentions, and openly acknowledging their part in breaking the sanctions. Tomorrow at 11am, together with two campaigners from Voices in the Wilderness US, the three British activists will set off for Baghdad.
