-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please forward to all relevant organizations, listserves, and individuals ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi there, I would like to suggest that press conferences be called to make an announcement along the following lines as a means of dramatically publicizing the terrible crimes being perpetrated against the people of Iraq, and as a means of making U.S. and British service people aware of their moral and legal responsibilities. CALL FOR U.S. AND BRITISH MILITARY TO REFUSE ORDERS TO BOMB IRAQ "We appeal to all members of the U.S. armed forces, the British armed forces, and any other members of national armed forces or civilian government employees to immediately begin to refuse to obey any order which directly or indirectly supports the bombing and illegal economic sanctions directed against the civilian population of Iraq. These actions are illegal under international law and standards regarding human rights and crimes against humanity, and may well constitute genocide. "The time has come to remember the Nuremberg Nazi war crimes tribunals - which found that obedience to orders, or to national law, cannot morally or legally justify human rights violations such as those perpetrated in Iraq. At Nuremberg, as today, perpetrators and intellectual authors of such crimes are guilty of crimes against humanity, and subject to both moral and legal condemnation and punishment by International bodies. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The above paragraphes can, of course, be fleshed-out with particular references to UN conventions, international legal precedents, and the relationship of these conventions and precedents to current U.S./British actions against the Iraq people. Could you please send me at least a one-line message indicating successful receipt of this suggestion.
