Following the vigorous debate we've had over the
past few days, you may be interested to know that a custodial sentence was meted
out today.
After a brief trial at Bow Street Magistrates
Court (at which she was not permitted to present her legal defence) Andrea
Needham was sentenced to 28 days imprisonment, over 1000 poundsd compensation
and 100 pounds legal costs.
Co-defendant Gabriel Carlyle was ordered to pay over 1000
pounds compensation and 100 pounds costs, and given a two-year conditional
discharge.
Both admitted throwing fake blood over the front of the
Foreign Office on 17 December 1998, in protest at the ongoing, illegal,
bombardment of Iraq, and the humanitarian disaster caused by sanctions. Both
were prevented from presenting their argument that their action was legally
justified.
Letters of support are very welcome, and should be sent
