Re: ANN CLWYD SAYS IT'S "UNFAIR TO GIVE THE CHILD SPECIAL TREATMENT" (fwd)

Dear All,

Just in case anyone misunderstood my reasons for posting yesterday's
Independent article to the list let me state that I think Ann Clwyd has
completely lost it when it comes to Iraq. I thought her statement- in
context - was
awful. I would have posted the Guardian article to the site as well
(where
she came across as even more unhinged) but it wasn't on-line.

For those of you who don't usually get the Independent Felicity Arbuthnot
has an article in today's edition.

Regards,

Gabriel.

Dear Gabriel,

Last night I heard Ann Clwyd saying on the world service that 'there have
always been exemptions for food and medicines' under the sanctions
arrangements. This is a bit like saying 'there has always been a right to
free speech under the US constitution' - strictly speaking, it's true, but
Americans have got into trouble for exercising this
right. Clwyd knows that all kinds of items are in practice banned from
Iraq; her cynical statement exposes her for the Madeleine Albright clone
that she is, though she likes to pose as a principled socialist in her
internal bickering with Labour Party whips.

By insisting that Saddam is the problem, Clwyd is trying to divert
attention from Britain's leading role in the dismantling of what was once
a sophisticated urban economy. It follows that we should give no support
whatever to her campaign for the prosecution of Saddam; British dictators
have no moral basis for judging their erstwhile partners in crime.
