BRITISH GOVERNMENT STEALS MEDICINES DESTINED FOR IRAQI CHILDREN

ARROW (Active Resistance to the Roots of War) PRESS RELEASE
10-Feb-98

BRITISH GOVERNMENT STEALS MEDICINES DESTINED FOR IRAQI CHILDREN

A large quantity of children's antibiotics destined for Iraqi children's
hospitals were secretly removed by customs officers from the luggage of
two peace activists, Milan Rai and Martin Thomas, at Heathrow Airport
today. Lollipops and doctors' notebooks were also seized. Rai and Thomas
travelled on unaware to Amman, Jordan and only discovered the theft of the
medicines on arrival in Amman.

The two activists are members of ARROW who are publicly breaking UN
sanctions by hand-delivering desperately needed medicines to hospitals in
Iraq.

Milan Rai said from Amman, "I am horrified that the British governbment
would stoop so low as to steal life-saving medicines from dying children".

The two are picking up further supplies of medicines already ordered from
Jordanian pharmacies, to continue this sanctions-beating action. The UN
sanctions have been in place for over 7 years making it impossible for
Iraq to buy vital medical supplies. Over 560,000 children according the
U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation have died as a rsult of sanctions
(1995 figures).
